WWI

WW I Centennial Book Group

WWI remains America’s forgotten war, even though more Americans gave their lives during that war than in the Korean and Vietnam Wars combined. WWI profoundly shaped the rest of “the American century.”  – The United States World War One Centennial Commission
In commemoration of those who lost their lives in WWI, and of the impact on American society by the “Great War”, the United States World War One Centennial Commission has organized a yearlong series of events and programs throughout the US. Lafayette Public Library has joined with other area libraries and with the Lafayette Historical Society to present a series of book discussion groups and historical figure based interpretive programs.
The first book discussion is based on the Willa Cather novel, One of Ours .
Cather explores the destiny of a grandchild of the pioneers, a young Nebraskan whose yearnings impel him toward a frontier bloodier and more distant than the one that vanished before his birth. In doing so, she creates a canny and extraordinarily vital portrait of an American psyche at once skeptical and romantic, restless and heroic.
Join the Book Discussion on Thursday, May 25, at 6 pm, at the Library. Pick up a copy of the book at the library, and share your thoughts with your neighbors.

Vandal damages public art

The Arts and Cultural Resources department is sad to report that the first act of vandalism has been committed on a piece of public art in the Art on the Street Sculpture program.  Susan Booker, Director, said, “I’m sorry to say we’ve had what I believe to be the first intentional damage to a piece of public art.”
A small bronze horse was removed by force, from the sculpture “Horizon Line,” by artist Michael Brohman.  Brohman’s sculpture was installed on April 5.  The sculpture is located at 104 N. Public Rd, in front of Santiago’s Restaurant.  It is valued at $18,000.
The crime was reported to the Lafayette Police Department.  Anyone with information about the crime is asked to report it to 303-665-5571.

The Empowerment Center of East County (EC)2, invites hundreds of youth and adult community members to participate in meaningful service projects throughout the Lafayette community on Saturday, April 22. Held in conjunction with Global Youth Service Day, the event aims to build community, foster community engagement, and celebrate youth leadership.
Lafayette in Action will commence with a breakfast and kick-off ceremony at Escuela Bilingüe Pioneer at 9:00 a.m.  Following, volunteers will fan out to project sites, including schools, community-based agencies, city parks, and churches, where they will complete identified projects for approximately two hours.  To celebrate their collective accomplishments, volunteers will then be invited to return to Pioneer Elementary for an afternoon event, featuring food, live music, youth presentations, a student service award ceremony, and silent auction (to fundraise for subsequent community events.)  To register or for more information, seewww.EmpowermentCenterEastCounty.org or contact Elaina@EmpowermentCenterEastCounty.org

Miner's Museum

Lafayette Miners Museum

The museum is open Tuesday 7-9 pm, Thursday and Saturday 2-4 pm. Schedule group tours by calling  303.665.7030.
The Lafayette Miners Museum is housed in the Lewis Home, a miner’s house built in 1890 at the Gladstone Coal Mine northeast of town. Like so many other homes in Old Town, it was moved into Lafayette when the mine closed. Each room contains artifacts and photographs from the four main periods of Lafayette’s legacy: the Native People, Agriculture, Coal Mining, and Lincoln Highway eras. The living room is a great place to get a cup of coffee and look at the enlarged photographs that depict the development of the city. The Miners Museum has reference materials for research, old town business displays, and memorabilia regarding the educational history of the city. The mining room is considered to contain one of the finest known collections of Colorado coal mining equipment, and the kitchen is furnished with household items from the early 20th century. The public is always welcome. Admission is free.
